Alzinger Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd 2017
|Region||Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau|
Wine EnthusiastThe most aromatic hints of pear, Mandarin orange zest and lemon balm play on the nose. The juicy palate broadens out generously and lets ripe stone fruit speak. Mirabelle plum juiciness makes this easy to like. Fresh zestiness becomes present on the appetizing, dry, long and lemony finish.
Wine SpectatorRipe, yet elegant and racy, with a floral essence and sprinkles of coriander seed to the clementine and blood orange flavors and hints of white chocolate. Solidly built, with powerful acidity that offsets the broad finish. Should develop nicely in several years. Best from 2021 through 2029.
Wine AdvocateThe 2017 Ried Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd is from the eastern part of the cru where the soil is very poor and the microclimate significantly cooler than in the central part of the famous cru. The nose of the 2017 is clear and crunchy but intense and concentrated with its ripe white, refreshing fruit aromas. Dense and concentrated on the palate, this is a full-bloodied, tightly woven and very elegant Loibenberg Riesling with great grip, mineral tension and piquant lemon fruit flavors. Highly stimulating on the intense, lovely, astringent finish with yellow fruit and floral flavors on the long, aromatic aftertaste. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.
