Fitapreta Baga Ao Sol Alentejo Red 2015
The 2015 Baga ao Sol is the winery's quixotic southern adventure for this grape, coming in unoaked and at 14% alcohol. It works surprisingly well. Owner-winemaker Antonio Maçanita was smart to make this unoaked. It may get some of that Alentejo sun (that's the "ao Sol" part of the name), but the lack of wood makes it seems fresher, purer and lively. This is a fine vintage for it, arguably its best. Bursting with flavor-I'll bet you didn't know Baga could have that much flavor-this has exuberant fruit, silky texture and a crisp, lingering finish. It's pretty awesome this year. It's simply delicious. To justify my enthusiasm and its price level compared to the nice prices in Bairrada, it does have to age and develop a bit. I don't think it will age like Bairrada Baga, but I won't be surprised if this holds beautifully for at least a decade from now. More? Well, there is very little track record. Let's be conservative and take that in stages.
