Chateau Des Jacques Morgon Cote Du Py 2015
Owned by Beaune merchant Louis Jadot, this cru estate produces some impressive wines. While its alcohol is excessive for a Beaujolais, it wears its power well. The black plum fruit and tannins from wood aging that are still very present will soften over the next year to give a rich generous wine with a style that is Burgundian rather than traditional Beaujolais. Drink from 2018.
A rich, concentrated style, displaying blackberry compote, dark chocolate and plum sauce flavors, edged with sweet spice and smoky details. Firm, integrated tannins and solid acidity lend ample structure through the licorice-tinged finish. Drink now through 2025. 1,000 cases made.
The 2015 Morgon Cote du Py is such a frustrating wine. Why? You can tell there is plenty of fruit here; however, it is submerged under the oak regime so that it ends up being another Gamay. This is Côte du Py, one of the finest vineyards in Beaujolais and yet it is difficult to ascribe a region to this wine let alone a specific vineyard. This is a wine that needs to ask itself: who am I?
