“Classic, beautiful ruby color, with complex aromas of red fruit, violets, autumn leaves, delicate spice and herbs. Full-bodied, layered & beautiful…Wild berries and balancing acidity on the palate. Already showing compelling bottle bouquet, with a punch of gripping, silky tannins for a mouthful of Piemontese flavor. Serious and seductive, with a long, savory finish. With seven years of bottle age, this 2016 is already drinking beautifully now and for the next 8-10 years.”

The 2016 Barolo del Commune di Monforte d'Alba is a sinewy, nervous wine that needs at least at few years in bottle to be at its best. Firm Monforte tannins envelop a core of dark fruit. Crushed rocks, minerals, black cherry, mint, sage and licorice open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A bit of patience will be rewarded. This is such a pretty and expressive Barolo.

Aromas of rose petal, underbrush and leather lead the nose. The solid, savory palate offers raspberry jam, clove and tobacco alongside taut youthful tannins. Drink 2024-2032.
